Mission Statement

Naugatuck Public Schools is a community of learners that values an active partnership with parents, businesses and the public to prepare students for the challenges of a diverse, global, and informated world. This is accomplished by maximizing the potential of all students by teaching them to think critically, solve problems, make decisions, communicate effectively and use technology, while acting ethically and responsibly.

Goals and Action Plan

2007-2010

Goal One : Achieve academic success for all students in reading, writing, mathematics and science as measured by state and district assessments.

  • Promote a rigorous K-12 curriculum aligned with state standards, effective, research-based instruction, and assured assessments which measure the application of essential knowledge and skills.
  • Promote educational programs, experiences and support services which respond to the diverse needs of students and assist them in identifying and pursuing their interests and aspirations.
  • Implement a data-driven decision making model to plan future instruction and programs, and monitor student, school and district achievement in meeting state proficiency levels.
  • Provide and participate in professional development opportunities so faculty, staff and Board of Education members may effectively comply with Connecticut laws and statutes, implement state mandates and district initiatives, and collaborate to increase student achievement.
  • Monitor implementation of administrator and teacher evaluation processes which encourage continued professional growth and accountability.
  • Actively seek to attract and retain quality staff. Explore incentive options for teacher shortage areas.
  • Implement a district technology plan and support the infrastructure and equipment necessary to utilize technology as an effective teaching and data management tool.
  • Create and monitor policies and practices which ensure that students attend school regularly, participate fully in the learning experience, earn a high school diploma, and plan for future education.
  • Prioritize the educational needs of the district and strive to secure necessary funding to implement effective, quality educational programs.
  • Prioritize the facility needs of the district and secure the necessary funding to ensure that each facility is safe, secure and conducive to learning.

Goal Two: Work for positive school-community partnerships.

  • Actively engage students, parents and the community in the educational process through school-community events, outreach programs, and celebrations of excellence. Communicate the pride and successes of Naugatuck Public Schools.
  • Promote the districtís educational programs and engage in a continuous exchange of information with the community to increase understanding of programs and state mandates, including No Child Left Behind. Investigate the expansion of technology as a communication tool, including a Board of Education website.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with businesses, community agencies and organizations to afford students the opportunity to extended learning through community service, job shadowing and career connections. Ensure policies and resources to support this process.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative agreements with local and state officials, police and fire departments, and community support services to foster safe, respectful schools. Ensure policies and resources to support this process.
  • Promote the districtís budget and create a budget presentation to clearly communicate information to the public. Advocate for funds to support state mandates and district initiatives, including early childhood education and secondary reform.
  • Work with central office personnel and town officials to investigate the feasibility of incorporating building projects into the five-year capital improvement plan to ensure that facilities receive adequate funding.

Goal Three: Expand high quality early education opportunities for Naugatuck children.

  • Determine the best methods for expanding HeadStart and full day kindergarten opportunities in Naugatuck, including addressing space issues that restrict expansion.
  • Investigate the best options for early childhood education in the district, explore sources of funding, and determine the best use of resources.
  • Develop a master plan for early childhood education.
